Is this the right program for you?

Davis Dyslexia Correction® can help if you experience symptoms of a dyslexic learning disability. These symptoms can affect your performance in a number of areas:

What IS dyslexia?
And how do I know if I’m dyslexic?

The short answer is: nobody knows yet exactly what dyslexia is… But an excellent source for information about it is the Ronald D. Davis web site, www.dyslexia.com. Ron Davis is the author of The Gift of Dyslexia, a wonderful book that explains the perceptual processes that can lead to dyslexia, ADD and a number of related effects. These effects can potentially interfere with reading, math – any activity dealing with symbols. Autistic and dyslexic himself from birth, but possessed of genius level IQ, Davis discovered how these perceptual processes work and devised a way to take conscious control of them. As a result he not only corrected his dyslexia, but became an author, public speaker, and founder of Davis Dyslexia Association®. Today DDA is an international organization (DDAI). And Davis’s techniques are bringing relief to people all across the globe.

There are many theories about what dyslexia is and also about what causes it. Some are studying brain scans to find out what dyslexic brains are doing “wrong.” But such studies start from the assumption that dyslexia is a defect. (For a wonderful "debunking" of some of this research read “Danger in the Classroom: ‘Brain Glitch’ Research and Learning to Read,” by Gerald Coles, which is available for download free here.) Of course, from our standpoint, the best book on dyslexia is The Gift of Dyslexia, because it starts from the premise that there is nothing wrong with the brains of dyslexics. In fact, there’s something very right with them! What’s needed is

1. a set of strategies or tools that allow us to be aware of how our gifted brains work, and,
2. the desire to take control!

So how can you tell if you or a loved one is dyslexic? Letter reversals are commonly viewed as symptoms of dyslexia, but the truth is that there are times in the development of young readers when letter reversals are quite normal. And not all dyslexics experience reversals. In fact they may appear to read quite proficiently but have trouble retaining or understanding what they read. At the Davis Dyslexia web site you can find a list: 37 Common Characteristics of Dyslexia. Most dyslexics will exhibit ten or so of these traits and behaviors at any given time. Many different factors in their lives or environment affect which ones manifest themselves and when. Take a look at the list and see how many characteristics you recognize...

If you’ve read Upside-Down Brilliance, by Linda K. Silverman and Jeffrey N. Freed, you may notice that a number of these traits are also characteristic visual spacial learners, and -- of giftedness! Not surprising – as many dyslexics are very bright. But in our society which places so much emphasis on academics, their brilliance can be masked by difficulties with reading. What a shame!!! It’s time for us to do something about that – recognize that there are many kinds of intelligence, many kinds of genius, learn to value ALL of them, AND provide the tools to take control, become the master of all our skills!
